The Earth Noticed

I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would cry out. - Luke 19:40

The stones noticed first.
Down where nothing is named,
they warmed a little,
not from fire,
just from being near
to something.

What had made them
felt closer than usual.
They leaned -
as much as stones can -
toward a place
they couldn’t point to.

Roots hesitated.
Sap forgot its way.
The ground held itself differently,
as if it remembered
who owned it.

The animals lifted their heads.
Not afraid.
Just still.

The horse stopped chewing.
The birds didn’t startle.
Breathing slowed.
Bodies drew in,
the way they do
when something unfamiliar
doesn’t feel like trouble.

Even the sky paused.
Stars kept their places.
Darkness behaved.

For a moment,
nothing went on ahead.

Then light stayed
where it was.

No explanation.

Most people slept through it.
