the strangers (2008)

Making Me Look Over My Shoulder

This movie is a clear example of how things are always evolving.  When I was a kid, the old Universal monster movies like Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman scared the daylights out of me - whereas now they're just fun to watch.

Scary seems relative

When The Strangers came out in 2008 (I can't believe 12 year have passed so quickly) it seemed kinda scary, but with movies like Sinister and their ilk, even this movie is just kind of tame. But in 2008 - it seemed pretty spooky, in a humans are the scariest monsters of all kind of way.

First time director but 1.5 from Ebert

"I think a lot of audience members will walk out really angry at the ending, although it has a certain truthfulness and doesn't cheat on the situation that has been building up. The movie deserves more stars for its bottom-line craft, but all the craft in the world can't redeem its story."  Roger Ebert, May 29, 2008

Just a final thought

This wasn't a great movie, but neither was it terrible.  At the time I saw it I had that sense of moderate anticipation that comes with slasher-type movies, and it was a fun watch.  I don't have much interest in seeing it again, but it was certainly entertaining!  Oh, and this quote is the most chilling part of the movie - think about it:

Kristen: Why are you doing this to us?

Dollface: Because you were home.RATED: Bad / Meh / Okay / Good / Great movie! / Top 10!

WATCH IT AGAIN: Nah

DO I WANT TO OWN IT?: No

Thanks for stopping by - see ya at the movies!
